Evelyn's 1934 22" Shirley Temple Composition Doll

We received this special doll on Tuesday 7-7-09.  Below are the photos taken of the doll before she was shipped.  Let me begin by saying this doll will be absolutely beautiful once we are finished.  Evelyn thought she would never have the chance to see her baby restored and brought back.  With everything I am about, I say she will....what do you think?  All those who believe in prayer, please pray that this doll not only will look fabulous but will be even prettier than she remembers and be a blessing to Evelyn beyond words.  God Bless all those who enter in to watch God helping us to fulfill this dream.

The photos will tell the story:

I want to personally thank Michele with http://thisolddoll.com for all of her help and for the perfect little shoes.  She also included the little pin on the waist as a gift to Evelyn.  God Bless You Michele.

Please note:  We added the net petticoat because this was a dream of Evelyn's to have it show at the bottom and puff the dress way out.  Dreams are very valuable to a person's heart, We personally feel that it is not always important to be valuable to a person's wallet.

This doll will never be for sale for she is part of the family and shall never be absent again from that family.

ONE LAST REPAIR

One last repair on Shirley.  She had a little pink spot next to her dimple from the blushing that was pinker then the rest.  We put plastic around her to prevent accidents with the paint.  Most know this but just incase some do not...Never wrap a composition doll in plastic for very long.  It collects moisture.  Also if your composition doll is incased in glass it needs to be well vented and never in an area that is humid.  The oil paint is the protection for the composition but just incase there is a tiny open crack it can be made worse with moisture. (there is an opening around the eyes and at the joints) This doll is now in the controlled doll room with no covering on her so she can dry and she will be shipped in soft tissue paper on the inside of her doll box.

The Stringing that we took out is worth keeping.  I love the way the metal clamps were placed on the string. Our first objective is to bring life back to these glassine eyes without replacing them.  This eye was not as bad. Missing a section of the upper crease.   As you can see a piece of the shattered varnish has come out.  We are in the process of replacing that piece one layer at a time.

A layer or so to go, then lighter brown and black pupils. Then Shiny! Then fix face.

All is sanded and patched..When dry, sanding again...then patch..then sanding... then painting.
Been Babysitting all day.  Giggle Final coat drying with shiny clear layer on. Looks a little better. Not quite as scary looking. Now doesn't she llook happy?
First Layer Of Milliput Compound Around Eyes and head. In Drying Mode. Desk Is where she stays all day long smiling at me. Layer at a time until the cracks are gone.  Trying to save original eyebrows.  Hope I can. She wants to play. "Hide and Seek" Notice that she now has a full eye crease.  Above photo shows it missing.  It's not missing now. All parts sanded and ready for spraying when husband figures it all out.  Doing good learning Air Brush machine so far. Close up of lil face hiding the eyes and those original eyebrows.  I will hand paint around the covered areas later. Dr. Husband painting lil arms in his office on upper level.  My office is on the lower level of the Sunroom warehouse here.
Took another one moments later.  He is such a good man to help on the dolls.  His normal time use to be guns and knives.  What happened?  HA! Here she is...Peek-A-Boo.  I will miss her now as she has been on my desk since she got here.  Now she is going to stay mostly in the Doll Room. She is on Mom's book shelf away from traffic of any kind so she won't topple over. Leg on right at the top is the test leg I tried just to see how many spots I needed to re-sand.  Before we got the ST oil paint I used Saucy Blend.  It is lighter than  the ST paint. All the other dolls will baby sit her while she dries.  With a lot more sanding and painting, this doll will be gorgeous.  I am getting very anxious. She is hanging over our listed Playtex Dryper Baby.  We lock the room and keep most dolls under plastic. Vinyl faces not so much. Plastic holds heat and moisture.
Here is the cutest little shoe box of your Baby's new replica shoes.  Michele is wonderful and makes them like they were the original.  I will send the box with your Baby. Going to sand dry doll body  tonight...then paint again...I cannot resist showing li shoes to you even though I was saving them for a surprise.  I am weakened...They are so very CUTE!!! This is so exciting...I feel like it is Christmas time.... Notice the new netted petticoat under it.  The Onesie and slip that you ordered are not here yet..but will be soon. This petticoat is perfect size to go over or under the slip.
Almost complete.  Legs match and just a 2 more layers and she will be completed in that area.

3 days later...>

Finally Ready to be put together.  Painting is wonderful on the pieces. Going to try to duplicate the original stringing of the 30's  HOWEVER...Waiting on--->  How bout this..Lips drying and little dots in nose.  Paint around the eyes is drying and THEN...Eyebrows, Could not save original ones. Here are her new eyebrows.  Not an expert at doing   eyebrows.

Since this doll belongs to a precious Lady, Evelyn who's only wish is to see her 1934 baby look new once again and to pass her down to her daughter Cynthia, we have chosen to take precaution and use Velcro to insure the absence of the rubbing of the joint areas.  As you will see soon it does not change the appearance of the doll but only adds future resistance to the breakdown of the surface skin which is the paint itself.  For the stronger posing of the doll we have found through experience that our special re-stringing, unlike most would do , seems to be a better and a more functional approach for the stronger arms and legs posing in display. Although not seen at this hour in these photos, we have already applied her wig and bow and are working this day toward her completion and hoping to have her photos by this evening or tomorrow morning. Today is 7-26-09.
